The Boss Enzo Maresca Labels Lead-Up Time as His 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' at the Club

Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca remarked that the preparation to Saturday's victory against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian offered a rather mysterious comment in his post-match interview despite securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points lifted Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, perhaps lightening the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's drought without a win to consecutive matches.

However, when asked about the full-back's contribution and general performance, Maresca surprisingly disclosed his frustration over the preceding 48-hour period at the club.

"How the lads want to learn has been fantastic and this is the reason why I commend them - because with so many problems, they are doing very well after a complicated week," he stated.

"Since I joined the club, the past 48 hours have been the most difficult because many people withheld support from us."

Pressed on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City boss continued: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When questioned if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the press: "I love the fans and we are very pleased with the fans."

Injury & Suspension Crisis

Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's persistent injury and disciplinary issues, remarking they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and striker Liam Delap to two serious injuries.

"I truly praise the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are doing exceptionally. Today was five games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our best player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to appreciate because the effort from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton strengthened their position in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was not immediately clear what exactly caused Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea head coach.

In that period, the Italian had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, held a training session at Cobham, faced a pre-match press briefing where he seemed relaxed, and engineered a victory over an in-form Everton team.

It was unclear whether any particular media reports had unsettled him, if social media comments were a factor, or if it was something more significant from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue related to the club's fans, some of whom have not yet fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
