Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such treatments need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
