Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
