This historic hillside village, a picturesque town in southern Spain, about 45 minutes’ drive from Granada, is the stimulating setting for this creative getaway. Painters of all abilities – even beginners – will learn how to plan and create abstract artworks. A portion of the time will be spent outside, working on structured activities in the open. These initial sketches and watercolour studies will then be expanded upon in the studio, with participants creating several abstract landscapes in acrylic paint to be exhibited in the village. The group has exclusive access of the venue, which is built around an central patio and has a roof terrace with panoramic vistas over the hills. The cost includes five days’ painting tuition; full board; and an trip to the local castle and other points of interest.

Vegetarian Culinary in the Algarve

This sun-drenched culinary holiday, set on a riverside villa in the inland Algarve, is inspired by the vegetarian dishes of celebrated cooks. Attendees will master the art of selection of small dishes, take part in a hands-on falafel session, refine brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains like a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. There are trips to the village market and a local vineyard to taste Portuguese wines, plus free time for walks by the nearby river, to unwind on the deck or swim in the pool. The accommodation, a renovated rural property, has multiple rooms, plus glamping tents in the grounds.

Street Dance in High Wycombe

This energetic camp is an uplifting, inclusive weekend dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The format throughout the camp is a party-style warm-up session, then three hour-and-a-half classes teaching various urban dance forms, then an 60-minute freestyle session to show off those solos. Dancers are split into groups based on skill level, so it is perfect for those who are completely new to popping and locking, right up to experienced performers or instructors. This event does not provide accommodation but there are a number of hostels and hotels within walking distance, and it is 23-35 minutes by train into central London.

Sea Shanty Break in St Ives

This coastal town is the excellent location for a sea shanty weekend. Participants will learn traditional shanties from a experienced musician, and try their hand at composing original ones. The schedule includes voice exercises, breath control techniques, performance tips and a final evening concert. The retreat is held in a rural hotel overlooking the bay. Full board are provided, such as a traditional tea on arrival, breakfast options, packed lunches and evening meals. Traditional rum, unfortunately, is not provided. Creative Writing in Crete

Writer and tutor Greg Mosse leads the regular sessions on this authors' getaway. He explores everything from plot, character development, setting and suspense, to sending manuscripts to agents. Greg’s wife, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in special sessions at the beginning and end of the week. The holiday is based at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – ten private accommodations surround a central garden with a pool (non-writing partners are encouraged to share). On the final evening, budding authors celebrate with a musical performance in the garden and a farewell dinner.

Beginners' Beekeeping in Mid Wales

A leading eco-centre near Machynlleth runs a wide range of courses on eco-living: from wildlife gardening to upcycling. This weekend introduction will help participants get to grips with the fundamentals of apiary management, study the biology of bees and learn about their environmental benefits. It is designed to produce “bee-friendly beekeepers”. This course is also a chance to relax in the centre's carefully maintained forests, which are home to polecats, otters, dormice, bats and uncommon bird species. Bed and breakfast the night before is 80 pounds, and all meals and lodging for the weekend is 97 pounds.
